1955
Senator Harry Cole, Delegate Emory Cole, and Delegate Truly Hatchell are elected as first African Mmerican men in legislature.
1958
Irma Dixon and Verda Welcome were elected as Delegates in 1958, marking the first time that African American women were elected to the legislature in Maryland.
1962
Verda F. Welcome became the first African American Woman State Senator in the United States.
1964
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is passed, outlawing discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin
1965
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is signed into law, prohibiting discriminatory voting practices.
1970
Seven more African American legislators were elected, including Senators Clarence Blount and Robert Dalton, along with Delegates Frank Conaway, Hildegardeis Boswell, Walter Dean, John Douglass, and Kenneth Webster.
1970
The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland is founded within the Maryland General Assembly. Delegate Arthur King convened a meeting of African American legislators that resulted in the formation of the caucus and adopted the official title, Legislative Black Caucus. Delegate King was the chair of the
Caucus in 1970, with Senator Verda Welcome serving as the Vice Chair.

Parren James Mitchell is elected as the first Black Congressman for Maryland.
